In 1932, Eugen Stephens established Western Steel & Wire in a small portion of a warehouse located on Bryant St. in San Francisco. Prior to 1932, Mr. Stephens had been a sales representative for the Wickwire Corp. utilizing the contacts he had made earlier, he was able to establish a loyal customer base. The business environment was difficult, but he persisted. Almost all wire sales at that time were in the coil form. A move from the Bryant location soon became necessary due to the construction of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
After World War II, the nation returned to a peace-time mode and the economy improved. The company expanded its offerings by adding straighten and cut machines. During this period, the company again needed to relocate when US Highway 101 was extended to the Bay Bridge.
In 1951, the company moved into its current location on 1428 Egbert Ave, San Francisco. The building was the first concrete tilt-up building erected in San Francisco.
In recent years, the San Francisco economy has been thriving with new industry, hi-tech startups and dot coms.Likewise, over our 90-year history, WSW has evolved, replacing old equipment and methodologies with new cutting-edge machinery, lean manufacturing, and innovative technology to maintain our competitive advantage.
Today, WSW is the largest supplier of wire and wire products in Northern California with strategic plans to expand domestically and globally.
